South Melbourne Market Residency
Public Art

City of Port Phillip
Artist Residency
2019

In 2019 I completed a Residency at The South Melbourne Market. The residency was designed to acknowledge the market as a community space, and celebrate it’s unique ability to show people at work - a lost sight in the 21st century, where relationships between ‘product’ and ‘production’ are increasingly hidden.

Each day I would document the market’s people from a market stall - turning the act of art making into a performance of sorts, and eliminating the line between studio and gallery. I would talk with stallholders and the broader market community about the market as a community space.

All of the finished work was created on salvaged material from the market itself - used cardboard, recovered paper and broken books. This work, along with my written documentation of the experience, were collected in a limited edition booklet that was freely distributed to the market community.
