At My Home, I'm A Proud Poof
26.5cm diameter
Synthetic Polymer on Ceramic
2024
On November 11th Victorian senator Ralph Babet, emboldened by the American election results, took to social media to proclaim ‘“In my house we say phaggot [sic], retard and n----r,”. It was a reminder that language is always a negotiated tool, that can be used as a weapon. The thing is, in my house, where I live with my boyfriend, we also use some words that were once used against us.
We, like so many of my queer comrades, have reclaimed those words as ours. We have taken back control of once hateful terms, and turned them into badges of honour. We do this to subvert the power of language, until eventually those words have no power at all.
I was thinking about how I could make those words more ‘ours’. So I made these one of a kind plates as a camp reminder that we get to make our own rules at home, and everywhere we go.
Never let anyone else define you.
