‘I have a very focussed attention span. I can only work on one painting at a time, and I do it with such intensity that I often forget to eat, and completely lose track of time when I’m working. I wanted to make a painting about someone who suffers from this too. A person completely lost in their passion.
I love the story the light tells in this painting. I wanted the light to abstract the space, so his environment became condensed down to its simplest details. I then contrasted his skin tones with the muted tones of his home so that he has a quiet intensity to his reading. He’s turned away from us, completely unaware we are even there.
The light also asks a question too. Has he been reading all day, or all night? It all adds to his passion.’
- James
