‘For a very long time I feel like queer culture has been about ‘cultural assimilation’, with the belief that if everyone held hands and played nice the world would see that we are indeed nice people, and that there’s no need not to like us. Unfortunately not everyone comes around, and that’s when it’s time to accept yourself for who you are, and learn to live with the idea that you just might be someone’s worst nightmare.
Interestingly the confidence to live so authentically is a very attractive characteristic. There is a long held platitude that once you love yourself only then can you truly be loved. I guess what I’m saying is be the most you version of yourself you can be, and fuck everybody who doesn’t like it, because the ones that do are the people for you. That’s exactly who this guy is, and I want to be more like him.’
