‘Here’s a weirdly boring fact - white Marigolds are a relatively new species, first grown in the late 70’s. I quite like that in the context of this painting, and the symbolism of Sam and his beautiful naked body.

We think of nature as prehistoric, like it’s been set in stone forever. But it’s actually a constantly evolving process that’s literally happening around us all the time. Our bodies are a part of that, because we are a part of nature, which in turn means our understanding of, and appreciation of beauty, is in constant progression.

I like that Sam is looking up to the Sun, like the white Marigolds that grow around him. I wanted the light to be low, creating an uncertainty if it’s sunrise, or sunset - times that suggest change. Sam doesn’t need to change though. He’s perfect just the way he is.’
